Come work with us!

Overview:

Deep Hollow Farm is hiring a part-time, season-long crew member to assist in all aspects of intensive vegetable production on a small, no-till farm in Southern Connecticut. This is an exceptional opportunity to learn all aspects of running a successful farm business directly from the farmers.

About Us:

We are a family farm renting about 1 acre of land. We have worked on and managed many other farms before coming to this property, and have about 20 years of combined experience in agriculture. We work hard but also take the time to appreciate the great life we have, and have to be flexible because we have an energetic 15 month old. Good food is our passion- we LOVE vegetables!- and we get a great deal of satisfaction from helping our friends and neighbors eat as well as we do.

Farm Description:

Deep Hollow Farm is a no-till, human-powered vegetable farm utilizing organic practices to supply high-quality food to our local community. We grow on about ⅓ acre of permanent beds, including one unheated high tunnel. Our growing practices are constantly evolving as we strive to improve the soil while focusing on achieving the highest possible and most efficient production on the land we utilize. We are going into our second season, and have had a wonderful reaction and support from our customers. We sell at the bustling Chester Sunday Market from June through October, as well as directly from the farm at our Farm Store, to several excellent local restaurants, and a local health food store. We also have an online store where customers can order ahead for pick-up at the farm, and will be holding a plant sale in May. The farm is on a beautiful dead-end road and is surrounded by streams, woods and state forest land with abundant hiking trails.

Description of Local Area:

Chester is a vibrant and idyllic community on the Connecticut River, with a lovely small town feel. There are many local businesses, including art galleries, artisanal stores, great restaurants, and a world-class brewery and ice creamery! We are located about 20 minutes from the ocean, and are less than an hours drive from larger cities such as Middletown, Hartford, or New Haven.

Job Description:

The crew member will assist in all aspects of the business. This includes vegetable production (seedling propagation, planting, crop maintenance, cultivating, bed turnover, harvesting, washing, and packing) as well as marketing (helping run our farm store and Farmers Market stand). As we are a small team, all of our workers play a critical role in keeping the farm running. Crew members may also be asked to help supervise or train other workers or volunteers.

Requirements:

We are looking for a hard-working individual who is able to perform physical work in a variety of weather conditions. We do not use power equipment on the farm except for mowing the grass, which means that workers are on their feet for the entirety of the day. An interest in organic farming or gardening is essential, but previous experience, while helpful, is not required. Crew members are asked to commit to the entire farming season.

Hours and Compensation:

Crew members work approximately 20-30 hours per week during the course of the season, with a peak during the height of the summer and dips in the early spring and late fall. Workers need to be available to work on weekends. Hourly wages will start at $13, and will increase to $14 in July, in accordance with CT minimum wage regulations. In addition to an hourly wage, workers are able to bring home lots of yummy vegetables from the farm. Also, while this is not an educational opportunity per-se, we love talking about farming and expect a crew member to gain a great deal of knowledge and skill during the course of a season. Unfortunately, we are not able to offer housing, but can assist workers in locating local accommodation.

Start/End Date:

The main season runs from April to October, with reduced hours potentially available before and after.
